Coworker was unhappy with me as a guest

I work at a fine dining restaurant that also does brunch. I made a reservation for my friend's birthday to come in for brunch on my day off and was pleasantly surprised when we were sat in one of my favorite coworker's section. I've never been served by him before, but I know him to be a really good server so I hyped

him up to all my friends before we sat down. So, the first red flag is he didn't come over to greet us for about 15 minutes. We ordered our drinks from the host and he was prompt and nice, so we weren't too worried about it. After we get our drinks, we wait about 10 more minutes to get our food order going. I

can clearly see that our server has only one other table in the section but hey, I get it, things are happening behind the scenes. However, when he's taking our order he cuts us off saying we're ruining his system and we have to do it a certain way. Whatever, we follow his system and get bossed around by him...

Then the real cherry on top comes when he hands us the bill and says to me "I took care of a lot of stuff, don't tell the manager." So I look at the bill and see he took 50% off. Awesome. I calculated what the bill would have been and tipped him about 30% of the original

bill. Say, the bill was $100 but would have been $200 originally so I tipped him $60 totaling $160. I personally thought this was more than enough and I would have been grateful had this been me. Well... he pulls me aside while we're leaving (but my friends were still standing right there)

and goes "server to server, when someone gives you a discount like that don't f them over with a quite frankly appalled and couldn't believe he'd embarrass tip like that." I was me like that in front of my friends. Not to mention the subpar service he gave us.

Should I have tipped more? I ended up going back in and giving him $40 more but wtf?? If I hook my coworkers up it's not because I expect them to make up for it in my tip. I'm trying to save them a buck and of course I appreciate a tip, but it's more of helping a homie out because we all know the industry can be brutal. Idk.. am I missing something about tipping etiquette with discounts??

doug5209 18 hr. ago Your coworker sounds like a ick. It also sounds like he sees himself as better than you if he is comfortable confronting you about what is a generous tip. Admittedly,

I can be petty and am not adverse to confrontation, but I would have had some choice NSF words with this clown if he had the to give me subpar service and then try and lecture me about tipping.

AHOY ccyosafbridge 13 hr. ago ● Last time one of my coworkers tipped over $60 I told them off because I knew they didn't make enough for all that.

greenboot-toot 11 hr. ago ● Seriously. Any time I've left a fat tip for a coworker they insists i don't have to because we all know how much each other makes lol. This is nuts
  • 16
Tiggerhoods 11 hr. ago ● Bingo. What he really said was "I somehow ripped off the restaurant(you know, like I do)and I expect you to play ball when I involve you without your consent.."

Hyperlight-Drinker 11 hr. ago ehhh, f the restaurant. I've comped more than I should for coworkers before, it isn't because I want them to pay me. Dude was just a ick.

Magnaminous_High · 18 hr. ago Would tell dude not to worry about discounting again, and just leave a standard 18% next time. $60 is far from a tip and frankly I might even mention to the owners he's stealing from them by discounting food but expecting the tip to "make up for it" - I'm sure it's not just your table he's doing this to, co-worker or not.

morgannonanauthorin - 7 hr. ago Yes! As a former server what the ick server did was theft. And to expect a better tip than 30% on the original bill is just the summit of hole behavior.

Informal-Meaning3302 17 hr. ago He was a real ickhead and after the bad service, bad attitude, AND the shaming in front of your friends, f that guy he should've thanked you! He expected you to read his weird little mind and embarrassed himself in front of your group.
